Flights to the Gold Coast
Most visitors fly into one of two airports — Gold Coast Airport itself, or Brisbane, followed by a road or rail transfer. Here's how to decide.
For most travellers the simplest airport is Gold Coast Airport (OOL) at Coolangatta, but Brisbane Airport (BNE) can still be the better choice when it offers a much stronger fare, schedule or international connection. Compare the total journey to your accommodation, not just the ticket price.
Gold Coast Airport or Brisbane Airport?
OOL is on the southern end of the Gold Coast, immediately convenient for Coolangatta, Kirra and Tugun and still straightforward for the central beach suburbs. BNE is much farther north, but it has a broader network and can be useful for long-haul or connecting itineraries. A cheap Brisbane fare can stop looking cheap once you add the extra ground transfer, especially for a late arrival.

Gold Coast Airport's current destination directory lists direct domestic services including Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Cairns, Canberra, Hobart, Newcastle, Darwin and Avalon, plus international services including Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton, Queenstown, Wellington, Bali and Fiji. Routes are not permanent: always confirm your exact dates on the airport or airline timetable.
What changed in 2026?
The airport's 2026 guidance reflects a growing international network. Fiji Airways began direct Nadi services in June 2026, while Qantas launched direct Auckland flights from 16 June 2026. These are useful examples of why a route list copied from an older travel article can become wrong quickly.
Which airlines use OOL?
Current airport information shows domestic and international services across carriers including Jetstar, Virgin Australia, Qantas, Air New Zealand and Fiji Airways, with other operators on selected routes. The airline that makes sense depends on origin, baggage needs and schedule rather than brand alone.
Arriving at OOL
The airport is in Coolangatta near the New South Wales border. Southern suburbs are the easiest onward trip; Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach require a longer transfer north. Public buses, taxi/rideshare, shuttles and rental cars are the usual options. Use current Translink journey planning for bus connections because route patterns can change.
Using Brisbane Airport instead
Brisbane can be sensible if it saves a connection, produces a materially better fare, or gives you a much better arrival time. Rail services connect Brisbane Airport through the metropolitan network toward the Gold Coast, and road transfers are also available. Build in a generous transfer margin rather than treating Brisbane as if it were another Gold Coast suburb.
Compare the full trip cost
When comparing fares, add checked baggage, seat fees, airport transfers and the value of your time. A flight into OOL that costs a little more can still be better value if it removes a long transfer from Brisbane. Conversely, a direct long-haul arrival into Brisbane may beat an itinerary that adds another flight just to land closer.
Early departures and late arrivals
Very early and late flights deserve extra attention because public transport frequency is lower and accommodation check-in arrangements matter. Before booking the cheapest departure of the day, price the realistic taxi, rideshare, parking or overnight option you would need to make it work.
School holidays and major-event periods
Gold Coast fares can rise sharply around Australian school holidays, Christmas/New Year, Easter and major events. Rather than relying on a magic “book X weeks ahead” rule, compare a range of dates and airports as early as practical, then use fare alerts if your dates are flexible.
International arrivals
Allow time for immigration, baggage and customs before committing to a tight onward transfer. If you are connecting through another Australian airport, check whether bags must be collected and re-checked and whether terminals are separate. Airline connection rules are more reliable than assumptions based on the airport map.
Best choice by where you are staying
For Coolangatta, Kirra, Tugun, Currumbin and Palm Beach, OOL is overwhelmingly convenient. For Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach and Southport, OOL is still usually the natural airport, but comparing Brisbane becomes more worthwhile for international or unusually cheap fares. For a multi-city Queensland trip, the direction of your road or rail itinerary may decide it.
