Miami

Miami sits between Nobby Beach and Burleigh Heads, close enough to both that it often gets treated as the bit in between. That undersells it. Miami has its own beach, a growing food scene and one of the Gold Coast's best-known evening food-and-music venues, while still feeling much more residential than the high-rise strip farther north.

The big 2026 change: the tram

Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 opened to passengers on 9 August 2026. The 6.7-kilometre extension from Broadbeach South to Burleigh Heads includes eight new stations, with Miami North and Miami stations serving this suburb. The extension has fundamentally changed Miami's usefulness for visitors: you can now stay here and ride north through Broadbeach, Surfers Paradise and Southport without first relying on a bus or car.

How often does the tram run?

Translink says trams on the extended network run every 7.5 minutes in peak periods and every 10 to 30 minutes off-peak. Frequencies vary by time of day, so use the live journey planner for a specific trip rather than building an itinerary around one fixed interval.

Miami Marketta

Miami Marketta is the suburb's best-known evening venue: a warehouse-style food, drink and live-entertainment space rather than a traditional produce market. Programming changes, so check the current event calendar before travelling across the coast specifically for it. On a busy night it can feel like a destination in itself; on the wrong night you may simply find the doors closed.

The beach

Miami Beach is a genuine open-ocean Gold Coast beach, not a sheltered swimming area. Use patrolled sections when available, swim between the red and yellow flags and pay attention to local conditions. The foreshore and nearby headlands also make the suburb useful for walking or riding between Nobby Beach and Burleigh.

Food beyond Marketta

Miami's food appeal is broader than one venue. The Gold Coast Highway corridor and surrounding streets have cafés, casual restaurants and bars, while Nobby Beach and Burleigh Heads are close enough to expand your options quickly. Staying here works well if eating out matters but you do not need Broadbeach-scale restaurant density outside your door.

Should you stay here?

Miami is now a strong alternative to Burleigh Heads for travellers who want the southern half of the central coast without giving up public transport. It is still more residential and less polished than Broadbeach, and accommodation choice is smaller than in the major resort precincts, but the new tram connection removes what used to be its biggest practical weakness.

Miami vs Burleigh Heads

Burleigh Heads has the national park headland, a stronger beachfront centre and a larger visitor reputation. Miami is usually quieter and more spread out. Both are now on the tram, so the decision is less about transport and more about atmosphere, accommodation and what you want within walking distance.

Miami vs Nobby Beach

Nobby Beach is a smaller, denser dining pocket just to the north. Miami gives you more residential space, Marketta and a longer stretch of suburb behind the beach. If you want to walk out to multiple restaurants immediately, Nobby Beach may win; if you prefer a broader local neighbourhood, Miami makes sense.

Airport and southern connections

Gold Coast Airport remains south of the tram terminus, so airport journeys require a bus connection or road transfer. Translink is reorganising southern bus services from 7 September 2026 to integrate them with the new tram. If you are travelling around that changeover, use live Translink directions rather than an older route description.

Practical tips

Choose accommodation with the tram station, beach and your likely evening venues in mind — Miami is long enough that "in Miami" does not automatically mean everything is a five-minute walk away. Check Marketta's current schedule, and if beach swimming matters, look for the patrolled zone rather than assuming the closest access track is the safest place to enter the water.
