Free Things to Do on the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast's theme parks get most of the attention (and most of the budget), but a genuinely good chunk of what makes the coast worth visiting doesn't cost anything at all.

Beaches

The obvious one, but worth saying properly: every one of the Gold Coast's 20-plus patrolled beaches is free to use, from the high-rise backdrop of Surfers Paradise to the quiet stretches of Palm Beach. See our full beaches guide for which one suits your trip.

National park walking tracks

The Burleigh Head National Park loop track is a free, easy 2 km walk with genuine coastal lookout points — see our Burleigh Heads guide. Further inland, the Hinterland's national parks (Springbrook, Lamington, Tamborine Mountain) are free to enter, though some specific attractions within them (like guided experiences) can charge.

Southport Broadwater Parklands

A free, supervised swimming lagoon on the calmer Broadwater side of Southport, alongside parkland, playgrounds and walking paths — a solid, cost-free alternative to the surf beaches, particularly with young kids.

Lookout points

Kirra Hill Lookout, the Burleigh Headland lookouts, and several Hinterland viewpoints (including the Best of All Lookout in Springbrook) are all free and don't require a booking — just turn up.

Markets

Evening markets running along the Surfers Paradise beachfront and in several other suburbs are free to browse (you only pay if you buy), and usually come with live music or buskers as a bonus. Miami Marketta, in Miami, charges no entry either — you only pay for food and drinks.

Whale watching from the headland (seasonal)

During the winter migration season, humpback whales pass close enough to the coast that headland lookout points — Burleigh Heads and Kirra Hill among the better spots — can offer free sightings without needing to book a boat tour.
