Gold Coast rail shutdown: railbuses replace trains to Brisbane through 5 October

Gold Coast line trains are not running between Varsity Lakes and Boggo Road from Saturday 19 September through Monday 5 October 2026, with timetabled rail replacement buses operating instead. The disruption is part of a wider extended closure affecting both the Gold Coast and Beenleigh lines.

For anyone commuting to Brisbane, heading to the airport via the rail network, or planning a day trip from the Gold Coast, this is not a normal weekend maintenance closure. It spans more than three weeks in total and changes again from Tuesday 6 October before normal services are scheduled to resume on Monday 12 October.

What is happening right now?

For the weekday closure from Monday 21 to Friday 25 September — and again from Monday 28 September to Friday 2 October — Translink says Gold Coast line trains will not run. Railbuses replace trains between Varsity Lakes and Boggo Road. The same broad arrangement also applies across the closure weekends through Monday 5 October.

Cross River Rail says weekday railbuses operate between Boggo Road and Varsity Lakes, with some journeys requiring a transfer at Eight Mile Plains busway station or Boggo Road for travel towards the city. Express and all-stops replacement services are being used, so the fastest option depends on your origin, destination and time of day.

The closure changes from 6 October

From Tuesday 6 to Sunday 11 October, the southern part of the line reopens. Beenleigh and Gold Coast services are scheduled to run as a combined all-stops train service between Varsity Lakes and Banoon. Railbuses then cover the remaining closed section between Banoon and Boggo Road.

Cross River Rail says normal Beenleigh and Gold Coast line train services are scheduled to recommence from Monday 12 October.

Gold Coast to Brisbane: leave more time than usual

Rail replacement buses are affected by road traffic, so the trip can take significantly longer than the normal train. If you have a fixed appointment, flight connection, event start time or work shift in Brisbane, build in a larger buffer rather than relying on your usual train travel time.

Translink is running a mix of all-stops and express railbus routes during the current phase, including services linking Varsity Lakes, Nerang, Helensvale, Beenleigh, Eight Mile Plains and Boggo Road. The route that makes sense for you can vary, which is why the live journey planner is more useful than memorising one replacement-bus number.

Travelling to Brisbane Airport

Airport line services are also altered during the closure. For the current weekday phase, Translink says Airport line trains run between Domestic Airport and Cleveland during peak periods and to Boggo Road after 7:30pm, while Cross River Rail advises Gold Coast passengers to use the relevant railbus connection before transferring to an Airport train.

If you have a flight, check the journey on the day and allow a substantial buffer. The replacement-bus leg is the part most exposed to road congestion.

Bikes and e-scooters cannot go on railbuses

Translink and Cross River Rail both advise that bikes and e-scooters are not permitted on rail replacement buses. Normal fares apply. If you normally combine a train trip with a bike or scooter, you will need another plan for the replacement-bus section.

Why is the line closed for so long?

The closure gives crews access to the rail corridor for several major programs at once. Official project information lists Cross River Rail, the European Train Control System (ETCS), Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail, the Loganlea Station Relocation project, Queensland Train Manufacturing Program works and general track maintenance among the activities being carried out.

Cross River Rail says scheduling the works across the school-holiday period is intended to reduce the impact compared with an equivalent closure during busier commuting weeks.

One important caveat: arrangements can still change

Both Translink and Cross River Rail warn that the closure program may change because of ongoing protected industrial action. That means this article is a planning guide, not a substitute for the live service status immediately before you leave.
